New Family Art Classes Offered for Spring Semester by Brookline Arts Center

"Mom, I have to make a project for school. It's due tomorrow!" Whose heart has not sunk at hearing these words?

Now, it will be possible to encourage your child to think ahead, and work on their own, in a well-stocked art studio and working under the guidance of an experienced teacher. The Brookline Arts Center is offering a four-session short class for children who have a school assignment to complete, as well as for kids who "just like to make stuff".

The Saturday afternoon Open Studios Class for Children 8 Plus will be offered at the Brookline Arts Center from April 8 through 29 or May 6 through June 10. Veteran BAC teacher Sara Smith is an experienced painter, sculptor and ceramicist. Each Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., she will use the Arts Center's resources to help your child learn how to plan and make a project. Registration is required: call 617-566-5715.

As children grow, it is important to schedule quality time with your teenager. Parents can share their enthusiasm for learning with their teen in the class Parent and Teen Jewelry and Metalsmithing on Wednesday afternoons starting on April 5, from 4:30 to 6:30. Work on a project together, then catch dinner at a local restaurant! There are also Jewelry classes available for teens and adults on Monday or Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30.

These, and many more, new art classes for children and adults are being offered this spring by the Brookline Arts Center. Call 617-566-5715 to receive a catalog, or visit www.brooklineartscenter.com for a full list of classes.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, at the corner of St. Mary's Street, convenient to Beacon Street and the MBTA.

The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are sponsored in part by the Brookline Commission for the Arts and the Brookline Community Foundation. The Brookline Arts Center is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

About the BAC: The Brookline Arts Center began 42 years ago in the basement of a Brookline home and in 1968 moved to its present home, a former firehouse, at 86 Monmouth Street. The BAC has received a Brookline Preservation Award for their use and upkeep of the historic Victorian firehouse. The Brookline Arts Center also provides free art classes for low-income populations through scholarships and the ARTreach program, in which free art classes are offered at Brookline Housing Authority buildings.
