What You’ll Need:

markers, sharpies or colored pencils
print-out or download of attachment (supeherofigureproportions.jpeg)
picture or reference of favorite superhero

Step 1:

Download or print out the document named superherofigureproportions.jpeg to use as an example. Using your ruler, make a straight vertical line on the left hand side of your own blank paper. Measure out and mark off 7 or 7.5 inches, depending on whether you are choosing the figure on the right or the left.

Make sure you number the inches themselves, not the dividing lines (see image).

Step 2:

Using the ruler, draw out light horizontal lines from where you marked off the inches. Make sure these are straight and perpendicular to the vertical line on the left hand side. These lines will be used to determine your proportions. When you are done creating these bars, double-check and measure your lines to see if they are correct.

Step 3:

Now you are ready to follow the proportion guide and start drawing the outline of your figure. Pay attention to where your figure’s various limbs and body parts line up. The head is almost completely in the first bar, or inch 1. The navel hits the line dividing inch 3 and 4. Depending on which figure you choose, the knees land somewhere around inch 6.

Step 4:

When you are done with the outline or sketch of the figure, find a picture of your favorite superhero and start adding details of their likeness. You can use markers, sharpies, or colored pencils to create a costume, mask, facial features, etc. Or, make up your own character!
