Drawing, Mixed Media and Fiber Art
More than anything, travel inspires my work. I was born in the UK in 1960 and began a lifetime of travel when, at six months, I set off with my parents to Australia…by ship. Gifted with cultured parents who were eager to explore, I learned to read at an early age and enjoyed exposure to art, music, and science. Our adventures around the globe always included visits to museums, archeological sites and wonders of the natural world.
Now, over 50 years later, I continue to see at work the forces of nature in the landscape. How humankind fits into and interacts with this landscape is endlessly fascinating to me. What do we create? What do we destroy? Cultures come and go, yet traces remain and co-mingle with others to create hybrids. We look to the sky for answers to our uncertainties and suffering. Who are our Gods? What is our responsibility to each other? Can love heal all things?
As vast and timeless as these questions are, they play out in my daily life. Choosing a companion, raising children, finding meaningful work, taking responsibility in the community, facing emotional frailties, illness and death, etc. These are communal yet deeply personal forces that demand responses. I hope that I meet these challenges with an open and curious mind. When all is said and done, I hope to have lived with a full heart, loving and being loved. Ever challenged. Ever amazed.
